Project Overview
Following the Transferer project, the BCB invited us to document their 2024–25 Mentorship Programme. The brief was to produce seven short films celebrating a cohort of emerging ceramicists, destined for YouTube and social media channels.

The Approach
Unlike the instructional videos, this project required capturing personality and context. We travelled across the UK to visit each maker in their own environment. The aim was to tell a cohesive story about the programme while respecting the unique style of each artist.
Challenges & Solutions
Logistics were the main hurdle. Filming ‘on the road’ meant adapting to a new location every shoot. One day we ware in a spacious collective workshop, the next in a small home studio. Lighting conditions varied wildly, from bright natural light to dark, windowless corners.

We relied on mobile, versatile kit to handle these shifts. Audio was another challenge; capturing clean dialogue in working studios – often full of echoes or background noise – required careful microphone placement. We also had to balance the schedule to ensure we captured enough footage of their making process without disrupting their actual work.
Outcome
The resulting seven films offer an intimate look at the mentees’ practices. They provide the BCB with engaging content that highlights the diversity of the talent they support.
